Job Description: Forest Cemetery Superintendent
The desired candidate for superintendent will be the primary person responsible for the care and daily operation of Forest Cemetery, a historic cemetery known for its natural beauty and meticulous upkeep. The desired candidate must be able to work independently, have a demonstrated ability to operate and maintain motorized equipment (mowers, backhoe, chipper, etc.), have excellent communication skills and enjoy the outdoors and a varied work environment and pace.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Reports to Forest Cemetery Association Board
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Supervises small staff of full-time, seasonal and part-time employees
HOURS: Full-time
COMPENSATION: Commensurate with experience
GENERAL SUMMARY: Prepares graves and maintains cemetery grounds, including but not limited to, excavating of graves, burial functions (installing urns), sodding, seeding and general plant/tree care. Knowledge and experience with earth moving and lawn care equipment is essential. Ability to maintain motorized equipment in running condition.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Follows all safety rules and regulations. Brings safety concerns to the attention of the cemetery board.
· Responsible for the overall presentation and appearance of the cemetery which includes: mowing grass, pruning, snow removal, trimming trees, and planting/maintaining landscaping.
· Possess knowledge of measuring, digging and pouring cement for foundations
· Maintain shop area in a safe and clean manner
· Clean interiors of mausoleums on a regular schedule
· Carefully detail and ensure accuracy of interment and entombment records; open and close graves, niches, crypts; and sets markers.
· Purchase supplies within established procedures and budget
· Work closely with office manager to ensure all record keeping is done within established procedures and with adequate safeguards to ensure accuracy
· Assist clients and the general public with the location of gravesites
· Must have a good knowledge of cemetery rules and policies and willingness to enforce such rules and policies with visitors
· Ensure cemetery property is secured at closing and gates are open/closed at the appropriate times
· Assist funeral homes, vault and monument companies as needed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred, or adequate life experience, preferably in the trades.
A valid driver’s license is required for this position. A driving history background check for insurance purposes will be conducted.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. The employee is occasionally required to sit, reach with hands and arms, climb ladders, stoop, kneel, crouch, give direction, and hear.
Employees are required to work onsite Monday – Friday with occasional weekend work when necessary. At times, unforeseen urgent matters will require work beyond regular hours.
Ability and willingness to work in inclement weather including heat, cold, rain, snow, ice and wind.
